What is it? The Stephen P. Collins Scholarship Fund was established in December 2000 in order to support Casa Grande and Petaluma High School graduates who at some time had been enrolled in the English Language Learner program and who are going on to higher education.
Who may apply? Casa Grande and Petaluma High School students who expect to graduate with the class of 2001, who at some time in their educational career had been enrolled as an English as a second language student, and who will enroll in college or university in the Fall of 2001 as a part-time or full-time student.
How did this fund get started? The "Bilingual Instructional Assistant employees of Petaluma City Schools initiated this fund with their own donations and named the scholarship for the recently retired Assistant Superintendent, Stephen P. Collins. Dr. Collins was widely recognized for his concern for and support of the district's bilingual program for English Language Learners and the staff that supports those students.
How is the scholarship funded? Funds for this scholarship come from private donations, businesses, and foundations. The funds are administered by the Petaluma Educational Foundation (PEF), a non-profit organization that supports programs for all students in the Petaluma area. PEF has made a donation to this fund.
How are the students selected? A committee of teachers, Bilingual Instructional Assistants; and citizens will establish the criteria and make the selections based on student applications.
How can donations be made? Tax deductable donations should be made payable to Petaluma Educational Foundation (Attention: Stephen P. Collins Scholarship Fund), 200 Douglas Street, Petaluma, CA 94952. For more details, please call Arnanda Hollibaugh, 778-4617.
